Hwa Chong Institution's Canteen Update: Addressing Student Feedback and Revising Meal Plans (2026)

Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) is making headlines! After a wave of online criticism regarding its new bento meal program, the school is teaming up with food caterer SATS to revamp recipes and presentation. This move comes after photos of the pre-packed meals went viral, sparking debate about their nutritional value and quality. But what's really happening behind the scenes? Let's dive in.

On January 15th, 2026, Principal Lee Peck Ping announced the revisions, including pre-ordering options at live stalls starting next semester and the establishment of an on-campus kitchen for bento meal production. The goal? To address concerns and collaboratively improve the canteen experience. The school is actively "refining the menu".

The controversy began when photos of the SATS-provided bento meals circulated online, with critics questioning if the food met adequate standards. Students confirmed the images accurately reflected what was being served, contradicting the school's initial defense. But here's where it gets controversial: Following initial reports, a teacher's message warning students against participating in the "canteen food controversy" circulated. This led to rumors of disciplinary actions against students who voiced concerns about meal quality. However, the school has denied these claims, stating that the teacher's message was sent out of concern for students’ well-being.

Adding to the confusion, rumors spread that students couldn't access their discipline records. HCI clarified that the discipline module was taken down in October 2025 for system updates and review, unrelated to the canteen issue. Access has since been restored.

The school has firmly stated that no students faced punishment or demerits for speaking to the media or raising canteen-related concerns.

Fast forward to the present: Long queues now form at the three live food stalls – Western grill, Yong Tau Foo, and noodles – during lunchtime. Students are also seen enjoying the turquoise bento boxes, which can be redeemed with a tap. The canteen offers eight halal-certified bento options, including two vegetarian choices, requiring pre-orders two days in advance. Media representatives sampled the food, with mixed results.

In interviews, some Secondary 4 students noted improvements in portion size, taste, and freshness since the new initiative's rollout. One student mentioned that the bento meals are a "good step" towards making the SATS meals more popular. Students also shared that they opt for live stalls when they have longer breaks, and the SATS meals when time is limited. Teacher Chan Hwee Sing appreciates the variety and convenience of the bento boxes, especially as a Halal option.

HCI's hybrid canteen model aims to solve operational challenges like long queues, the declining sustainability of the traditional stall-only model, and difficulties retaining stallholders. The school offered stallholders options to continue as self-employed owners of live food stalls or join SATS. Five chose to continue operating stalls, three opted to work under SATS, and others retired or moved to other schools. The school has engaged over 2,600 students through dialogues and conducted food tastings since 2024. A canteen review committee, composed of staff, students, parents, and SATS representatives, is being formed. Principal Lee encourages feedback and suggestions.

What do you think? Are these changes enough? Do you agree with the students who have seen improvements? Do you think the school handled the initial criticism effectively? Share your thoughts in the comments!
