New York Giants fans can breathe a sigh of relief. The Giants and John Harbaugh finalized a five-year deal on Saturday to make the Super Bowl XLVII champion their next head coach. This move comes after a week of intense negotiations and a perceived front-runners status for the Giants from the start.
Harbaugh expressed his excitement, stating, 'It’s the New York Football Giants. I can’t wait to get started. I know how great our fans are. I’ve seen them close up enough. We are going to build a team that’s going to play a brand of football that you will be proud of.'
The negotiations began late Wednesday night and continued through the week, with both parties working diligently to reach an agreement. Harbaugh, known for his direct reporting style, will now report directly to Giants co-owner John Mara. This arrangement is a departure from the traditional front-office hierarchy, where the head coach reports to the general manager and the GM to the owners. During his tenure with the Baltimore Ravens, Harbaugh had a similar direct reporting relationship with team owner Steve Bisciotti.
Harbaugh also looks forward to building a strong partnership with Giants General Manager Joe Schoen, who is in the final year of his contract. Despite interest from up to nine teams, the Giants made a strong push to secure Harbaugh's services. This included a series of meetings, a tour of the practice facility, and a meet-and-greet with quarterback Jaxson Dart, all culminating in a dinner at Elia Mediterranean restaurant.
The initial concern among fans about Harbaugh's departure seems to have been assuaged as the deal was finalized. Now, the focus shifts to Harbaugh's staff assembly, marking the beginning of a new era for the New York Giants.
