Live Updates: Major Works Cause Delays on A172 and A174 at Middlesbrough Junction
Motorists in Middlesbrough are facing significant disruptions as major works commence at a key junction. The A172 Marton Road/A174 Interchange is undergoing a comprehensive program of repairs and improvements, expected to last until autumn. Traffic maps indicate long tailbacks, particularly on Dixons Bank and eastbound on the A174, as early as Tuesday morning, March 3.
The extensive works, which include concrete repairs beneath the bridge, waterproofing replacement, new kerbs and footways, resurfacing, and the installation of pedestrian fencing and vehicle safety barriers, will necessitate a temporary continuous contraflow system on the A172. This may lead to occasional overnight lane and full road closures, as well as temporary lights.
To minimize disruption, Middlesbrough Council has collaborated with the main contractor, Esh Construction, to ensure traffic can still use the bridge during the works. Advanced warning notice boards will be placed on affected roads, and any full closures will be announced in advance.
Here's a breakdown of what drivers can expect:
- Temporary lights and occasional overnight lane and full road closures.
- Contraflow system reducing north-south traffic capacity over the bridge to single lanes in each direction.
- Left turns only for accessing Marton Road via the slip road, and no right turns permitted when traveling east or west on the A174.
- No right turns onto the A174 when crossing the bridge.
The works, which began on Monday, March 2, are scheduled to continue until autumn 2026, and drivers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly.
