Pocket Casts Wear OS Update: Speaker Playback & Interface Improvements! (2024) (2026)

Imagine being able to enjoy your favorite podcasts directly from your smartwatch, without the hassle of Bluetooth headphones. Pocket Casts has just made this a reality with its latest update for Wear OS, which introduces the ability to play audio directly through the built-in speaker of your smartwatch.

This exciting new feature comes with Pocket Casts version 8.3, following Google’s earlier implementation of watch speaker playback in Wear OS 5.1. Now, users can easily listen to podcasts right from their wrist, eliminating the need for external audio devices. However, if you prefer to switch to Bluetooth headphones or speakers, you can still do so quickly via the volume controls, allowing for a versatile listening experience depending on your environment.

It’s worth noting that speaker playback capabilities are still quite limited across Android smartwatches, with only a select number of apps currently offering this function. While platforms like YouTube Music do support audio playback through the watch speaker, they often restrict music functionality. In contrast, Pocket Casts is carving out a niche as a practical media app that fully embraces this feature, making it especially useful for short listens, quick news updates, or hands-free scenarios.

Along with this audio enhancement, the update also brings a suite of interface improvements to the Wear OS app. The homepage now highlights episodes that you've ‘Starred’ on your smartphone, while any played or archived episodes are visually greyed out for better clarity. In individual podcast pages, previously played or archived episodes have been completely hidden, allowing users to find active content much more efficiently.

Moreover, the ‘Downloads’ screen has received a facelift, complete with a loading spinner to provide clearer feedback on download status. The update also incorporates various minor performance tweaks and stability enhancements, including quicker image loading times and fixes for issues related to volume boost and user interface elements.

To access the Wear OS app, users will still need a Pocket Casts Plus subscription, which is available at $3.99 per month or $39.99 annually. Version 8.3 is currently being rolled out through the Play Store.

Looking ahead, Pocket Casts has announced plans for an upcoming update, version 8.4, which will phase out the long-standing green ‘Radioactivity’ theme. According to the company, this theme has seen limited usage and has led to numerous user interface bugs. By removing it, the aim is to streamline the app and focus on features that resonate more with its listeners.

But here’s where it gets controversial: some users might miss the unique touch of the Radioactivity theme, raising questions about whether such changes enhance usability or detract from the app’s character. What do you think? Are you in favor of these updates, or do you feel that certain features should remain intact for the sake of nostalgia? Share your thoughts below!
