UTSW receives ARPA-H award to create functioning artificial liver (2026)

UTSouthwestern Medical Center has received a groundbreaking ARPA-H award to develop a revolutionary approach to creating artificial livers. This project, known as Vascularized Immunocompetent Tissue as an Alternative Liver (VITAL), aims to address the critical shortage of donor livers and the associated challenges for patients. By utilizing patients' own cells and 3D printing technology, the team led by Dr. Muhammad Rizwan and Dr. Madhukar Patel has the potential to transform liver transplantation and drug testing. The project is supported by ARPA-H's Personalized Regenerative Immunocompetent Nanotechnology Tissue (PRINT) program, which is dedicated to developing innovative solutions in healthcare.

The VITAL project involves a multi-disciplinary team of researchers who will work together to create a fully functional artificial liver. The process begins by harvesting cells from patients with liver disease and converting them into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), which can then be transformed into various liver cell types. These cells will be combined with a hydrogel 'bioink' to create a 3D-printed liver structure. The team's unique approach includes growing blood vessels and bile ducts within the generated liver tissue, ensuring its functionality.
